Who teaches you
A Marcelo Garcia affiliate, taught by Manuel Morales.
Shōgun is Denver's Marcelo Garcia Association affiliate, so the curriculum you learn here is the one built by one of the most influential grapplers in the sport's history.
Head instructor Manuel "The Gorilla" Morales trained directly under Marcelo Garcia. A military veteran and active IBJJF and ADCC competitor, he teaches with structure and detail — and he still coaches the beginner classes himself.

02
Arriving

03
In class
You'll warm up, learn positions step by step, and drill with a partner. Live rounds are optional as a beginner.
04
Afterwards
A coach will talk through where to start, how often to train, and your membership options. No pressure to sign anything that day.
FAQ
New to Jiu Jitsu? Start here.
Everybody on our mats had a first day. Here are the questions we hear most — asked honestly, answered honestly.
Do I need to get in shape before starting?
No. You can start at your current fitness level and build from there. Take breaks when you need them, and let your instructor know you're new. Training is part of how you get in shape — you don't have to arrive that way.
Do I need to be strong or athletic?
No. Jiu Jitsu teaches you to use positioning, leverage, and technique. Strength and athleticism can help, but they aren't requirements for your first class.
Am I too old to start?
You don't have to start as a child to learn Jiu Jitsu. Adults begin at many different ages. Tell us about your goals and any physical limitations so we can discuss an appropriate starting point.
Do I need martial arts experience?+
Not at all. You can arrive with no knowledge of the positions, terminology, or techniques. Learning those things is what class is for.
Will I have to fight someone on my first day?+
You aren't expected to walk in and prove yourself. Your instructor will explain the activities and how partner practice works. Let them know it's your first class and ask questions whenever you're unsure.
What if I'm nervous or feel awkward?+
That's normal. Learning unfamiliar movements with new people can feel uncomfortable at first. Nobody expects you to know what you're doing on day one. Focus on learning one thing at a time.
Is Jiu Jitsu only for people who want to compete?+
No. You can train for self-defense, fitness, confidence, friendship, or the enjoyment of learning. Competition is an option, not a requirement.
Do I have to train every day?+
No. Start with a schedule you can maintain. Two classes a week can be a practical starting point for many beginners. Consistency matters more than trying to attend every class.
Is there punching or kicking?+
Standard Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training focuses on grappling — positions, escapes, control, and submissions — rather than punching and kicking. Ask us about the format of any separate self-defense or other martial arts classes.
What does "tapping" mean?+
Tapping your partner or clearly saying "tap" signals that you want the action to stop. Partners must release immediately. You can tap whenever you feel uncomfortable; you don't need to wait for pain.
Can I get hurt?+
Jiu Jitsu is a contact sport, so injuries are possible. Following instructions, communicating with partners, tapping early, and training with control help manage the risk. Tell your instructor about injuries or limitations before participating.
Is Jiu Jitsu suitable for women?+
Yes. Women are welcome to learn, train, and develop their skills here. If you have questions about partners or what your first class will involve, contact us before you come in.
Does my child need to be confident or athletic already?+
No. Children can start while they're still developing coordination, focus, and confidence. Let us know if your child is shy or nervous so we can help them feel welcome.
Will Jiu Jitsu make my child aggressive?+
Our goal is to teach control, respect, and responsible use of skills. Children should understand that training techniques are for supervised practice and appropriate self-defense — not for showing off or starting fights.
Can Jiu Jitsu help with bullying?+
Training can help children build confidence and practice staying calm, setting boundaries, and responding to physical situations. It cannot guarantee that bullying will stop. Walking away and getting help from a trusted adult remain important.
What should I wear, and do I need to buy equipment first?+
The answer depends on whether your first class is gi or no-gi. Contact us before attending — call (720) 917-9829 — so we can explain what to wear and what equipment is needed.
Practical answers
What are the beginner class times?+
All of our Marcelo Garcia Jiu Jitsu classes are all-levels and beginner-friendly: Monday 12pm & 6pm (gi), Tuesday 6am, 12pm & 6pm (no gi), Wednesday 12pm (gi), Thursday 6am, 12pm & 6pm (no gi). Wednesday 6pm is Judo. Open mat is Friday at noon and Sunday at 9am.
What age groups are in the kids program?+
Our kids classes are for ages 5–12, Monday through Thursday at 5pm.
What do memberships cost?+
Adults: $200/month on a month-to-month membership, or $185/month billed monthly for 12 months on an agreement. Kids: $140/month month-to-month, or $120/month billed monthly for 12 months. Day, week and punch passes are also available on the pricing page.
What about cancellation and freezes?+
Month-to-month memberships have no long-term agreement. Our 12-month agreements include freeze and cancellation terms — call (720) 917-9829 or email info@shogunjiujitsu.com and we'll walk you through the exact terms before you sign anything.
How do I enroll or book a first visit?+
Choose a membership on the pricing page to enroll online, or send us a message and we'll set up your first visit. You can also just call (720) 917-9829.
Do you have loaner gis, and what do uniforms cost?+
Ask us before your first class — call (720) 917-9829 and we'll tell you what's available and what a uniform costs. We don't want you buying anything before you know you like it here.
You don't have to know Jiu Jitsu to belong here. You just need a place to start.
